David Byrne and St. Vincent are set to release their collaborative LP Love This Giant next week, which is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated albums of the year. We’ve previously heard the great album-opening tracks ‘Who‘ and ‘Weekend in the Dust‘, and now you can stream the entire thing. While the talented and distinctive artists share writing and vocal duties here, it’s the influence of the former Talking Heads frontman which dominates here, with his preference for idiosyncratic horn arrangements and globe-trotting eclecticism overshadowing Annie Clark’s guitar work. But the two make a fine pair regardless, taking turns on lead vocal duties and delivering a funky, loose and energetic vibe with strange, intellectual ruminations on everything from aging to culture to nature throughout. They are joined by producers John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, The Walkmen) and Patrick Dillett, as well as guests Antibalas and The Dap-Kings on ‘The One Who Broke Your Heart’. Byrne sounds particularly invigorated, and while on first listen Love This Giant doesn’t prove as exciting as Clark’s terrific solo albums, it certainly makes for one of the most unique and enjoyable collaborations of the year.
Love This Giant is out September 11. Stream it below (via NPR).
