The first trailer has surfaced for the long-delayed Butter, a highly promising indie comedy which was shot in 2010 and did the festival rounds last year. The Jim Field Smith-directed film stars Jennifer Garner as the ambitious wife of a former butter sculpting champion (Ty Burrell) who takes it upon herself to win the championship title and save her family’s reign in the spotlight, even if it means sabotaging her biggest competitors — a 10-year-old foster child (Yara Shahidi) and her husband’s stripper mistress (Olivia Wilde). The ensemble cast — which also includes Rob Corddry, Hugh Jackman, Kristen Schaal and Alicia Silverstone — all look in fine form here, and Butter seems to be both absolutely charming and politically intriguing (described by many as a political allegory for the 2008 U.S. Democratic primaries).
Butter opens October 5 in the US. Watch the first trailer below (via The Playlist).
