A red-band trailer has hit for David Ayer’s latest gritty cop flick End of Watch, which employs a curious found-footage aesthetic. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as LAPD partners and best friends who run afoul of a drug cartel operating in their precinct and are suddenly in over their heads. Anna Kendrick, Frank Grillo, Cody Horn and America Ferrera also star. This latest trailer is pretty intense, and as a fan of Gyllenhaal I’m curious to see how End of Watch plays. Ayer has been churning out urban crime films with morally ambiguous cops for over a decade now, to varying degrees of success — as a writer on Training Day, The Fast and the Furious and Dark Blue and a director on Harsh Times and Street Kings — and while his latest film doesn’t necessarily seem to be bringing anything new to the genre (aside from maybe shaky handheld HD cameras?), I’m intrigued enough to check it out.
End of Watch opens September 21 in the US following its TIFF premiere. Watch the red-band trailer below (via The Playlist).
