[WATCH] Trailer #1 for Ang Lee’s LIFE OF PI

The lyrical first trailer for Ang Lee’s much-anticipated Life of Pi has been released, and this 3D adaptation of Yann Martel’s Booker Prizer-winning 2002 novel promises to take his striking imagery to a whole new level. The film stars newcomer Suraj Sharma in the titular role, and this trailer features several glorious shots as he dives through a sunken ship, passes a stricken zebra, watches his boat sink, and peeks under the canvas of a lifeboat to discover the tiger who will become his companion. The shots are stunning throughout, and I have no doubt that Lee will prove a master of the 3D format, but we get little idea of the film’s story or how the film’s inexperienced lead will fare. Life of Pi also stars Irrfan Khan, Gérard Depardieu, Tobey Maguire, Adil Hussain, and Shravanthi Sainath Tabu – none of whom are featured in this first trailer – and I’m intrigued to see whether this film will prove to be something truly special, or merely just a visual feast.

Life of Pi is due November 21. Watch the first trailer below (via The Playlist).
