The first theatrical trailer has hit for Paul Thomas Anderson’s feverishly-anticipated The Master, following two impressive teaser trailers which offered tantalizing glimpses of the film’s leads: L. Ron Hubbard-esque religious leader Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his right-hand man Freddie Sutton (Joaquin Phoenix). Here we see more of Phoenix – in his first performance since 2010’s I’m Still Here – who looks just sensational (and increasingly Oscar-worthy), not to mention more of Mihai Malaimare Jr.’s stunning cinematography. This astonishing trailer also features stronger hints toward the film’s scientology inspiration, with lines like, “Good science by matter of definition allows for a difference of opinion, otherwise you merely have the will of one man, which is the basis of cult.” Each new glimpse of The Master confirms that P.T. Anderson has returned with something special (and potentially controversial), and this is one of my most anticipated films of 2012.
The Master opens October 12 in the US. Watch the first theatrical trailer below (via The Playlist).
