Earlier today, Jimmy Fallon tweeted about a “big announcement” regarding Frank Ocean’s forthcoming LP Channel Orange, which hinted that we might be hearing new music sooner than expected. We had previously heard the epic jam ‘Pyramids‘ and the great new single ‘Sweet Life’, but the entire album has now been released one week early on iTunes, and is also streaming on Ocean’s Tumblr. On first listen, this is a breathtaking effort which delivers on the amazing promise Ocean showed on last year’s Nostalgia, Ultra, not to mention his Odd Future collaborations as well. With Ocean’s brave recent decision to come out still garnering headlines, Channel Orange should launch the singer to a whole new stratosphere if there’s any justice. The stunning LP, which features guest appearances from Earl Sweatshirt, John Mayer and André 3000, is easily an Album of the Year contender, remarkably outshining stellar new releases from Twin Shadow and Dirty Projectors. Ocean brought album cut ‘Bad Religion’ to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight, backed by The Roots in his TV debut, and it was a wonderfully tender performance which is likely to send chills down your spine. 2012 is undoubtedly Frank’s year.
