Ever-evolving Brooklyn indie outfit Dirty Projectors return next week with Swing Lo Magellan, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s superb breakthrough LP Bitte Orca. The group’s overachieving mastermind Dave Longstreth has purposefully taken a different tack with this album, as he recently explained to The New York Times, “These are songs without any context. They’re less about arrangement. They’re less about orchestration.” That commitment to songcraft and melody over arrangement was evident on the LP’s great lead single ‘Gun Has No Trigger‘, as well as on the deceptively breezy ‘Dance For You‘, and now you can stream the rest of the album and find out how it compares to Bitte Orca courtesy of The Guardian. The Projector’s line-up has shuffled once again, with vocalists Amber Coffman and Haley Dekle returning to fill the void left by Angel Deradoorian, and the substitution of drummer Brian McOmber by Mike Johnson. This new line-up ably assists Longstreth’s new direction – which is less conceptual and markedly more earnest than ever – resulting in the group’s most accessible and intimate effort to date, but also their most beat-driven. As expected from a new Dirty Projectors release, there’s a lot going on here and it demands many spins, but on first listen I can say this much with certainty: Swing Lo Magellan is an exceptional album which is absolutely worthy of inclusion in the Album of the Year conversation. Dirty Projectors released a fascinating trailer today for the upcoming Longstreth-directed film Hi Custodian, which you can also find below.
Swing Lo Magellan is out July 10. Stream it below (via The Guardian).
