Sony are doing their utmost to remind everyone that The Amazing Spider-Man is imminent, boldly proclaiming that it’s the most anticipated film of the US summer in their latest trailer. Perhaps if it wasn’t for The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, Brave… However, I must say that this four-minute “super preview” – essentially a new 90-second scene with the latest trailer tacked on the end – is perhaps the best trailer for Marc Webb’s 3D reboot so far. The preview opens with an impressive action set piece on a bridge which feels like a classic Spider-Man set up, as Andrew Garfield’s Spidey is forced to save several cars and a kid from plummeting into the bay as a result of The Lizard’s (Rhys Ifans) rampage. It’s the kind of sequence that you could only see in a Spider-Man movie, which is exactly what this film needs to differentiate itself from the likes of The Avengers. From what we’ve seen in the trailers so far, Garfield continues to look far more engaging than Tobey Maguire’s mopey Peter Parker (ditto for Emma Stone over Kirsten Dunst), and Ifans’ Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard should make a compelling antagonist for Spidey. Ifans character was also given some viral treatment over the weekend, with an Oscorp Industries internship video setting up the Oscorp Industries website, as well as a behind the scenes video detailing The Lizard’s transformation, both of which can be found below. I’ve been pretty sold on the cast and director of The Amazing Spider-Man since the outset, but it’s still difficult to get excited about a reboot so soon after the initial franchise ended. I’m very interested to see whether this film will prove a difficult sell at the box office, and if so, what that means for future franchise reboots.
