[WATCH] COSMOPOLIS Red-Band Teaser: David Cronenberg gets weird again

David Cronenberg (Videodrome, Dead Ringers) is set to return to the glorious weirdness of his earlier work this year with Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson in a role which is likely to completely reinvent his image. The film, which is an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 2003 novel, is set in the not-too-distant-future and follows 28-year-old Wall Street billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) on a 24-hour odyssey across Manhattan. A red-band teaser trailer was released yesterday for Cosmopolis, and it looks like Cronenberg’s most overtly sexual film since 1996’s Crash and his most visually strange since 1999’s eXistenZ, following several mainstream efforts (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises) which were no less rewarding. For those who found last year’s A Dangerous Method a little too dry, however, this will no doubt come as welcome news. Cosmopolis features an impressive supporting cast – Paul Giamatti, Kevin Durand, Juliette Binoche, Samantha Morton, Sarah Gadon, Mathieu Amalric – but the focus will clearly be on whether Pattinson can shed his tween Twilight image and deliver a decent performance here. There was an outcry from fans when he replaced Colin Farrell, but I think watching Pattinson get completely messed-up in Cronenberg’s world will be far more surprising for audiences. There is no US release scheduled yet – this teaser is for the French release on May 23 – but this is already one of my most anticipated films of 2012.

[…] The teaser trailer for David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis came out of nowhere to shock and excite us back in March, promising a potentially surprising and fascinating turn from teen heart-throb Robert Pattinson as well as a delirious return to the director’s surreal middle period (Videodrome, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch). A full trailer for French audiences arrived this month with the announcement that the film will screen in competition at Cannes, and it was quickly followed up by a somewhat different trailer for international audiences. This second (slightly NSFW) full trailer features a little more of Sarah Gadon, who plays the wife of Pattinson’s character (last seen in Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method), as well as more glimpses of apocalyptic madness and the motley crew of characters – played by Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Almaric, and Jay Baruchel – who inhabit the world adapted from Don DeLillo’s novel. Although I still have no idea what to expect, I can’t help but feel that the Cronenberg of old is back, and that excites me to no end. “Finally the first film about our new millennium” is a bold claim, but let’s hope there’s some truth in it.
